Jakarta Aswinnews.com – The Indonesian Mountaineering Federation (FMI) officially established a partnership with the Papua Mountaineering Association (PMA) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaborative management of the Carstensz Pyramid climb in the Lorentz National Park area, Papua, on Saturday (February 7, 2026).
The MoU signing, held at Journey Coffee in Tebet, South Jakarta, relates to support for regional development programs and sustainable management of natural diversity (Nataraga).
The cooperation agreement was signed by the Chairman of PB FMI, Major General Mar (Ret.) Buyung Lalana, SE, and the Chairman of PMA, Maximus Tipagau, SE, marking a historic moment for Indonesian mountaineering, both nationally and internationally.
In his remarks, Major General Mar (Ret.) Buyung Lalana emphasized the importance of standardization and good governance in all nature management activities.
“This collaboration is not just about climbing, but rather a joint effort to ensure that Indonesia’s natural diversity (Nataraga) provides real economic benefits to the community, while upholding the principles of zero accidents and zero waste,” he said.
He considered the signing of this strategic partnership to be an important milestone in maximizing the potential of Indonesia’s mountains and landscapes as a pillar of public welfare.

The main focus of this partnership is the synergy between professional mountaineering activities and the economic empowerment of local communities around the Nataraga mountain area, as a form of synergy between nature and public welfare.
Meanwhile, PMA Chairman Maximus Tipagau, SE, called the signing of the MoU a historic step for the Indonesian climbing world.
“This collaboration is a golden bridge to elevate the potential of Papua’s mountains, particularly Puncak Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid, as one of the world’s Seven Summits with international prestige,” he said.
According to Maximus, through the collaboration between PB FMI and PMA with the central government, Indonesia is expected to lead the global mountaineering scene. This synergy is also expected to simplify bureaucracy and improve cross-ministerial coordination, including the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Villages, the Ministry of Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as involving the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
On the same occasion, PB FMI, accompanied by Secretary General Dr. Muhammad Iqbal El Mubarak, Sp.B, stated that the collaboration between FMI and PMA will be aimed at improving climbing safety and professionalism across the board.
This collaboration includes monitoring climbers’ health, ensuring safety, standardizing nationally and internationally certified equipment, establishing clear regulations, modernizing emergency response systems on climbing routes, and providing more adequate supporting facilities for the community and climbing communities.
With this collaboration between PB FMI and PMA, both parties are optimistic that Indonesia’s mountains can become a safe, professional, and sustainable natural laboratory for climbers, while also providing tangible economic benefits to the surrounding communities.
