The ongoing Iran–Israel war should serve as a moment of reflection for Muslims around the world to stand united on the principles of justice, humanity, and Islamic brotherhood (Ukhuwah Islamiyah)—not to fall into the trap of sectarian fanaticism or sentiments that divide the Ummah merely because of differences in belief, school of thought, or the assumption that one’s own group is always right.
Differences in madhhab (Islamic schools of thought) should never justify suspicion, hostility, or division among Muslims. It is time for us to let go of narrow-minded group fanaticism and place truth above all sectarian interests.
Prioritize Justice
The majority of scholars, from Ibn Taymiyyah to Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, emphasized that Muslims are obliged to defend the oppressed, even if they belong to a different madhhab. Iran, despite being predominantly Shia, has openly defended Palestine and consistently opposed Israeli occupation.
This is not about agreeing with all their theological beliefs, but rather standing firmly on the side of the oppressed. This should be the guiding principle for Muslims.
The Danger of Sectarian Sentiments
The Sunni–Shia narrative is often weaponized by global powers to divide the Muslim Ummah. Historically, Sunni and Shia communities have coexisted peacefully and enriched each other’s knowledge.
The respectful and collaborative relationship between Zaid bin Ali (a Shia Zaydi figure), Abu Hanifa (a Sunni scholar), and Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a Shia Imam) proves that doctrinal differences did not prevent them from honoring and learning from one another.
The Call from Scholars
Prominent scholars such as Buya Yahya have reminded us that this is not the time to debate matters of creed, but the time for Muslims to unite against oppression and colonization. Even Sheikh Assim al-Hakeem, a Saudi scholar, emphasized that Muslims must stand with their oppressed brothers and sisters, regardless of sectarian affiliation.
Beware of Information Warfare
Muslims must be intelligent and critical in selecting information, as many international and regional media outlets deliberately amplify the Sunni–Shia conflict to serve specific geopolitical agendas. We must not fall into narratives intentionally designed to divide the Ummah.
Build Inclusive Islamic Solidarity
Now is the time to put truth above blind fanaticism. Support for Palestine and rejection of Israeli aggression must transcend sectarian boundaries. Iran’s bold stance against Israel and the United States deserves recognition, as Iran remains the only Muslim country that has openly dared to challenge Zionist hegemony and its allies.
Let us commit to building an inclusive Islamic solidarity, grounded in shared humanity and collective conscience.
