Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands ā The waters of Dompak Lama Village once again became the stage for a vibrant celebration of Indonesiaās 80th Independence Day. National pride soared high as the Indonesian Fishermen Association (HMNI) Riau Islands together with Dompak Lama Youth successfully held the Traditional and Racing Ketinting Boat Competition on Monday (August 18, 2025).
From as early as 8 a.m., crowds of locals and visitors gathered by the shoreline, eager to witness the thrilling races. The roaring engines of ketinting boats blended with the cheers of the audience, transforming the event into more than just entertainmentāit became a symbol of unity and the resilience of the coastal community.

Two Categories, One Red-and-White Spirit
The competition featured two main categories:
- Traditional Fishermenās Ketinting: 6.5 HP engines covering 2 laps (±300 meters).
- Racing Class: 15 HP engines, pushing racers to complete 5 intense laps.
Every participant was required to wear a life jacket and proudly display a small Indonesian red-and-white flagāa reminder that even at sea, the spirit of independence sails strong.

Unity and Solidarity at the Core
Led by Iskandar (Coy) and his dedicated teamāJemahat, Dedek, Junaidi, Hendra, Iwan, Dedi, Helmi, and Hamzahāthe event ran smoothly and full of energy. The race was officially flagged off by Ravi Azhar, Chairman of HMNI Riau Islands, while prayers were led by Herman, grounding the excitement with a touch of solemnity.
Without financial backing from local authorities, the people of Dompak Lama relied on solidarity. From community donations to voluntary support, every hand contributed. A modest prize pool of around IDR 3 million awaited the 16 participants (8 in each category).
āPrizes are not the main goal. What truly matters is the spirit of togetherness, solidarity, and love for our homeland,ā said Iskandar with pride.

An Inspiration from the Oldest Racer
One highlight of the event was Haji Noran (68 years old), the oldest participant, who braved the waves with determination. His participation was more than a raceāit was a message of perseverance and an inspiration for the younger generation to keep preserving this coastal tradition.
A Tradition that Unites
With 80% of its residents depending on the sea, Dompak Lama has made the ketinting race an annual tradition. More than just a competition, it is a living expression of fisherfolk identity, cultural pride, and gratitude for independence.
