Director Joko Anwar’s latest film, “Ghost in the Cell,” has been officially selected for the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. This Come and See Pictures production will compete in the Forum section, a prestigious category known for curating films with strong artistic vision and cinematic boldness.
The Berlinale’s Forum section is known as a platform for works that rely not only on narrative, but also on bold form, aesthetic exploration, and a keen understanding of social and political realities. The selection of “Ghost in the Cell” places the film within the tradition of global arthouse cinema that pushes the boundaries of genre conventions.

The Forum is also often home to genre films with strong artistic weight and social commentary. Some examples of films that have screened in this section include Jang Jae-hyun’s Exhuma (Pa-myo) (2024) and Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer (2014), which were shown as special screenings, affirming the Forum’s reputation as a prestigious space for high-quality films.
“We are very proud that Ghost in the Cell was selected for the Forum section of the Berlinale. This section is known for curatorially selecting films that are not only strong in story, but also relevant to the social and political situations of their countries of origin,” said Joko Anwar.
World Premiere in Berlin
Ghost in the Cell is scheduled to screen three times during the Berlinale series, from February 12–22, 2026. The film will have its world premiere on February 13, 2026, at the historic Delphi Filmpalast am Zoo in Berlin.
Set in an Indonesian prison plagued by violence and injustice, Ghost in the Cell blends horror elements with sharp social criticism. The film reveals how a system can protect power, even in a space that should be a place of punishment and justice.
