Tanjungpinang, July 24, 2025 – A wave of enthusiasm filled the ballroom of Hotel Bintan Plaza as the Regional Executive Board (DPD) of the Indonesian Fisherfolk Community Association (HMNI) for the Riau Islands was officially inaugurated. This landmark event not only ushered in a new era of leadership, but also laid the foundation for concrete collaboration aimed at enhancing both the welfare of fisherfolk and the sustainability of marine ecosystems in the region.
The inauguration was officiated by the Secretary General of HMNI’s Central Executive Board on behalf of the HMNI Chairman, formally launching a new leadership team expected to deliver breakthroughs in the marine and fisheries sectors. Newly appointed Chair Ravi Azhar, accompanied by Vice Chair Syahrizal, expressed deep gratitude for the trust and significant responsibility bestowed upon them.
“We accept this mandate with full commitment. HMNI Riau Islands is ready to be at the forefront in defending fisherfolk’s rights and preserving ocean health,” declared Ravi Azhar in his inaugural address.
Strong support also came from the Riau Islands Regional Police, with the Regional Police Chief and his team ensuring the event’s smooth and secure execution. The presence of community leaders, civil society organizations, and TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces) representatives signaled broad recognition of HMNI Riau Islands as a vital partner in coastal development.
A highlight of the event was the attendance of Tanjungpinang Deputy Mayor Drs. Raja Ariza, who extended congratulations and encouragement to the newly appointed board. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of synergy between fisherfolk organizations and local governments to improve the livelihoods of coastal communities.
The event carried a unifying theme:
“Unity in Ethnic Diversity as a Strength to Preserve Our Oceans for a Golden Indonesia 2045” — reflecting the spirit of pluralism and mutual cooperation that defines the Riau Islands, and which is hoped to be a key asset in confronting climate change and the exploitation of marine resources.
More than just a ceremonial event, this inauguration marks the beginning of a collective movement. Under its new leadership, HMNI Riau Islands aims to launch innovative programs, serve as a bridge between fisherfolk and government, and ensure coastal voices are heard with dignity and influence.
HMNI Riau Islands is poised to play a strategic role as a pioneer for inclusive, sustainable, and equitable maritime development. This momentum is expected to contribute meaningfully to Indonesia’s vision of becoming a global maritime axis by 2045.
