BUENOS AIRES – On October 25, 2025, Father Fransiskus Betekeneng, SVD, celebrates 25 years of priesthood—a quarter-century of dedication to missionary service across continents. Born in Karangora–Lewoleba, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, he now shepherds tens of thousands of Catholics in Argentina, embodying the voice of peace, tolerance, and faith from Indonesia to the world.

From a Remote Village to Latin America

Born on October 10, 1969, in Lewoleba, Lembata Regency, Father Fransiskus is the eighth of nine siblings, and the son of the late Petrus Gute Betekeneng, a prominent independence figure and educator, and Elizabeth Letek Pureklolon, a devout religious mother. His parents’ legacy of service and piety deeply shaped his spiritual journey.

He began his priestly formation at San Dominggo Minor Seminary in Hokeng (1990), followed by the SVD Novitiate in Nenuk, Atambua (1991), and further studies at Ledalero Major Seminary (1994). In 1995, he was sent to Bogotá, Colombia, to study theology and immerse in Latin American culture. There, he mastered Spanish and found his missionary path.

He was ordained a priest on November 24, 2000, in his hometown of Lewoleba by Bishop Darius Nggawa, SVD, then Bishop of Larantuka. His ordination motto, drawn from Genesis 12:1, “Go to the land I will show you,” has become the compass guiding his lifelong mission across the globe.

Leading 65,000 Parishioners in Argentina

Today, Father Fransiskus serves as Parish Priest of the Holy Trinity Parish (Parroquia Santísima Trinidad) in Rafael Calzada, Buenos Aires, under the Diocese of Lomas de Zamora. He leads over 65,000 Catholics across 10 sub-parishes, showing unwavering commitment in his pastoral duties.

“Father Fransiskus is not only a spiritual leader but also an active advocate of interfaith tolerance, guided by the principles of Pancasila, Indonesia’s foundational philosophy,” said Lt. Col. Fidelis Betekeneng, ST, his older brother.

In collaboration with the Indonesian Embassy in Argentina, Father Fransiskus frequently speaks at interfaith forums, promoting peace and religious harmony throughout the country. His mission transcends church walls, becoming a form of soft diplomacy and moral leadership.

A Spiritual Legacy from Lembata

His story reflects the profound truth that great leaders can emerge from humble beginnings. His father, a teacher and community leader, helped establish Lembata as an independent regency in 1954, liberating people from poverty and underdevelopment.

Now, Father Fransiskus continues that mission—not through political struggle, but through spiritual and cultural diplomacy. His work reinforces the belief that missionary life can be a powerful force for transformation.

As he marks 25 years of priesthood, Father Fransiskus Betekeneng is a living testament that faith, discipline, and compassion can move mountains—and cross oceans. His legacy inspires future generations that even from a remote village, one can become a beacon of hope and peace to the world.
