JAKARTA – Maret Samuel Sueken may not yet be a household name, but his journey over the past 25 years across Indonesia’s strategic industries — from energy and infrastructure to power distribution and the capital city development — makes him one of the nation’s most capable and accomplished technocrats.
Born in the remote hamlet of Parang Bobbo in Tonasa Village, Tombolo Pao District, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, Maret is the son of a Balinese migrant father and a native Makassarese mother. His father, I Nyoman Sueken, was a hardworking farmer who migrated to Sulawesi, while his mother, Daeng Nappa Patau Gessa, passed down the wisdom of Makassar traditions. It’s this cultural foundation that shaped Maret’s disciplined and resilient character.
Starting From Scratch in Balikpapan
Maret’s professional journey began humbly in 1999, when he left his village to work in Balikpapan as a junior engineer for a local contractor. Just a year later, his talent earned him a place in the French EPC company CEGELEC PT. INDOKOMAS BUANA PERKASA (Vinci Energies), where he rose through the ranks over the next decade, ultimately becoming Commissioning Manager.
From there, he moved into key engineering and leadership roles in several multinational and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), including PT. TIMAS Suplindo, PT. Chiyoda International Indonesia, and later, was appointed Independent Commissioner and Chairman of the Audit Committee of PT. Djakarta Lloyd in 2022.
Stepping into National Strategic Roles
Maret’s next breakthrough came in 2024, when Indonesia’s Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises entrusted him with the role of Independent Commissioner and Audit Committee Chair at PT. Rekayasa Industri (REKIND), a subsidiary of Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company.
Simultaneously, he was assigned as a Power Systems Expert at PLN UID Kaltimra, working on the construction management of distribution networks in the core government area of Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
His expertise also brought him into the AMNT Private Airport development project in West Sumbawa, as well as infrastructure projects such as Ministry of State Secretariat (KEMENSETNEG) office buildings and Segment 3B Toll Road (KKT Kariangau – SP Tempadung) at IKN, under PT. PP (Persero) and KSO WIKA-PP-JAKON.
“I am just a farmer’s son from a remote village, but I believe that integrity, perseverance, and hard work can take you far. My goal is to make a meaningful impact — not just for companies but for the country,” Maret told AswinNews.com.

His proven track record includes major projects both onshore and offshore, leading in roles such as Project Manager, Commissioning Manager, Construction Manager, Interface Manager, Hook-Up Manager, and others.
A Vision for His Homeland
Despite his national success, Maret has a personal mission: to return and contribute to his hometown in South Sulawesi. His dream is to improve the infrastructure, education, and economy of the very village where he once ran barefoot among rice fields.
“One day I hope to go back to Parang Bobbo, bringing everything I’ve learned to help build the future of my community. Every great journey should give back to its roots,” he said with emotion.
