Tears of a Convert — A Family Religious Drama by Indra Gunawan Featuring Cross-National Cast

Merak Abadi Production, in collaboration with Suraya Filem Malaysia, officially launched the trailer and poster for Tears of a Convert (Air Mata Mualaf) during a press conference held on Monday (October 27, 2025) at Studio 7, XXI Plaza Senayan, South Jakarta.

The launch marks the beginning of the film’s introduction to the public — a warm and reflective family drama about family, love, and the courage to choose one’s own path in life.

From the very first scene, the trailer conveys calm yet powerful emotions. Tears of a Convert does not sensationalize the change of faith as a dramatic turning point, but rather portrays how family, love, and the search for identity often collide in the journey of a woman brave enough to choose her own direction.

The film invites audiences to understand that faith — whether spiritual, moral, or personal — is not something automatically inherited. Everyone is born into an environment that shapes them, yet at some point, we all arrive at the question:

“Is this truly my path, or merely a habit passed down to me?”

Tears of a Convert is about the courage to say, “This is my chosen way.” A choice that may differ, yet still springs from love.

💬 Story and Characters

The conflicts shown in the trailer are not presented in black and white. The relationship between Anggie (played by Acha Septriasa) and her mother (Dewi Irawan) is full of love, yet burdened with tension — not because they reject each other, but because both fear losing one another.

Director Indra Gunawan explains that the film is not merely about conversion, but about maturity and self-discovery.

“For me, faith isn’t something that can be simply inherited. Faith is the result of a long inner journey. Family can be the warmest place, but also where our choices are tested,” he said.

Leading actress Acha Septriasa shared that she deeply relates to Anggie’s character.

“Anggie isn’t rebelling against her family. She loves her mother, but she also loves the truth she finds for herself. This conflict feels universal — it’s about having the courage to be honest with yourself without losing love for your family,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dewi Irawan, who plays Anggie’s mother, admitted the role felt personal.

“I have a daughter myself, and when I read the script, I immediately felt connected. One day, she might make different choices from mine — and that’s not just about religion, but about finding one’s own identity. This film reminded me that a mother’s love also means learning to accept,” she reflected.

Actor Rizky Hanggono, who plays a member of Anggie’s family circle, was also moved by the depth of the story.

“There’s a heated argument scene between my character and Anggie. After filming, I immediately thought of my own sister. It reminded me that behind every disagreement in a family, there’s always love that never really goes away,” he shared.

🎥 Message and Production

Producer Dewi Amanda emphasized that Tears of a Convert is told from a family perspective, not a narrow religious one.

“This is not a preaching film. It’s a film about being human — about a child who wants to be heard, about parents who fear losing their child, and about how differences don’t mark the end, but the beginning of understanding. Being different is hard, but with steadfastness, we can walk without hate,” she said.

Visually, the trailer captures an atmosphere of intimate everyday life — family dining rooms, quiet car rides home, small quarrels hiding deep wounds, and moments of silence when one asks:

“Do I have the right to choose my own path?

The film also features a cross-national collaboration between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia, with Malaysian actors Syamim Freida and Hazman Al-Idrus joining the cast. Their presence adds a universal touch to the story, showing that values such as love, courage, and steadfastness are shared by people everywhere.

Filmed in Indonesia and Australia, the movie presents intimate and emotional cinematography within the drama-religious-family genre.
Tears of a Convert stars Acha Septriasa, Achmad Megantara, Dewi Irawan, Rizky Hanggono, and several international actors.

The film is scheduled to premiere across Indonesian cinemas on November 27, 2025, followed by releases across Southeast Asia and the Middle East in early December 2025.

The official trailer and poster are now available on Merak Abadi Productions’ YouTube channel and the film’s official social media platforms.

More than just a story about faith, Tears of a Convert invites viewers to reflect:

“What is my chosen path? And do I have the courage to walk it with steadfastness?”

🕊️ SYNOPSIS

Tears of a Convert follows Anggie, an Indonesian woman studying in Australia who becomes a victim of domestic abuse from her boyfriend, Ethan. One night, after leaving him and hitting rock bottom, Anggie collapses in front of a mosque and is rescued by a young woman who works there.

The kindness of this woman — and the serene recitation of the Qur’an she hears — touches Anggie’s heart. She begins learning about Islam and gradually finds inner peace. Her decision to embrace Islam, however, brings painful rejection from her family and social circle.

Her journey is filled with pain, resilience, and hope for redemption, reflecting the universal themes of spirituality, forgiveness, and self-acceptance — reminding us that every human being deserves the right to choose their own path and return home with peace in their heart.
