In commemoration of the 117th National Awakening Day, the Professors Council of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI), in collaboration with ILUNI FKUI and the Student Executive Board (BEM IKM FKUI) Cakrawala Karsa, held a Free Forum at the IMERI FKUI Hall, Salemba, Jakarta, on Tuesday (May 20, 2025). The event was attended by students, lecturers, alumni, and key figures in Indonesian medical education and healthcare.
In their statement, FKUI alumni emphasized the strategic role of medical students as the frontliners in the healthcare system. They asserted that upholding the integrity of the medical profession and mastering the science of healing are moral obligations in ensuring health as a fundamental right of all Indonesian citizens.
Amid growing unrest over the Ministry of Health’s recent policies—particularly those affecting healthcare services and medical education—participants felt the need to speak out. These policies are seen as neglecting the standards of medical education, which is not merely a matter of numbers or regulations but concerns the future of national healthcare quality.
In his speech, Dr. Wawan Mulyawan, SpBS, Subspes N-TB, SpKP, AAK, Chairman of ILUNI FKUI, stressed that safeguarding the quality of medical education is a vital struggle for a healthy and just nation.
“National Awakening Day always reminds us of the spirit of Boedi Oetomo, which united diverse elements of society to lay the foundation of independence. Today, we need that same spirit of awakening to protect the sovereignty of medical education and the health of the Indonesian people,” said Dr. Wawan.
He highlighted several pressing issues, including the oversimplification of the medical education process, the separation of academic functions from teaching hospitals, the diminishing independence of medical collegiums, and the potential lowering of doctors’ competency standards.
“Medical education is not just about technical training. It is a profound process that shapes health professionals who carry the highest moral responsibility—safeguarding human lives,” he firmly concluded from the podium.
