Kartini is Better Known Than Dewi Sartika, Why is That ?

Every April 21, schools in Indonesia commemorate Kartini Day with various activities such as kebaya competitions, poetry, and speeches. The figure of Raden Ajeng Kartini is indeed deeply embedded in history as a pioneer of women’s emancipation. However, did you know that there was another female figure who also made great contributions, namely Dewi Sartika?

Dewi Sartika was a fighter for women’s education from the land of Sunda. She founded the Istri School in 1904 in Bandung, which became the initial milestone for education for women in West Java.

In practice, Dewi Sartika’s struggle was very real and had a direct impact on society.

So, why is Kartini’s name more often commemorated nationally?

One of the main reasons is because Kartini wrote many letters containing thoughts on education and women’s rights.

The letters were collected and published as

“Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang”,

Which then spread widely even to the Netherlands.

Because of this, Kartini is known not only as a local figure, but as a symbol of broader social change.

The Indonesian government also designated April 21 as Kartini Day, especially since the era of President Soekarno. Kartini is considered a symbol of emancipation who is suitable as a role model for Indonesian women.

Meanwhile, Dewi Sartika’s struggle is better known at the regional level, especially in West Java.

Although she has received the title of national hero, her name is not as popular as Kartini in national level commemorations.

Now, it is time for us to start getting to know more Indonesian female heroes. Kartini and Dewi Sartika are two important figures who complement each other. Both fought in their time, in their own ways, for the future of Indonesian women.
