Surjan, a traditional Yogyakarta clothing that is identical to batik motifs, symbolizes more than just traditional clothing.
Behind the beauty of the motifs and details, there is a deep philosophy that reflects the pillars of faith and Islamic values.
*A. Pillars of Faith in Surjan:*
1. Batik Cloth
The batik cloth used as the basic material for Surjan symbolizes belief in Allah SWT as the Creator. The intricate and beautiful batik motifs reflect the diversity and majesty of His creation (Smith, Doe & Rowell, 2002).
2. Surjan Color
The color of the surjan, usually dark brown or black, symbolizes belief in angels as holy beings who serve Allah (Johnson, Williams & Brown, 2005).
3. Surjan Buttons The number of surjan buttons, usually five, is a symbol of belief in the holy book of Islam, the Quran.
4. Surjan Sleeves The long surjan sleeves signify belief in the Day of Judgment as a certainty that will occur (Smith, Doe & Rowell, 2002).
5. Long Cloth: The long cloth worn as the bottom of the Surjan symbolizes belief in good and bad destiny that has been determined by Allah (Johnson, Williams & Brown, 2005).
