On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, the editorial team of aswinnews.com succeeded in interviewing the King of Kraton Pakungwati Caruban Nagari 1446 M Trah Padjadjaran, Panembahan Ratu III (Drs. PC. H. Muhammad Muslim MP, or Ki Ageng Macan Putih), the 8th King.

Ki Ageng shared the history of Kraton Pakungwati Caruban Nagari, Trah Pajajaran in 1446 M and Panembahan Ratu III:

1. Kraton Pakungwati & Caruban Nagari (1446 M)

In 1446 M, the region of Cirebon was still in its early stages of development as a kingdom transitioning from Hindu-Buddhist influence to Islam. Key events during this period include:

1.1. Prince Cakrabuana (Sri Manggana) Establishes Cirebon

Prince Cakrabuana, son of King Siliwangi of Pajajaran, left the Pajajaran palace and established a settlement in Caruban Nagari. He began building the infrastructure of the government in the area, which later became the foundation of Kraton Pakungwati.

1.2. Construction of Kraton Pakungwati

Prince Cakrabuana built the palace as the first center of government in Cirebon. The palace was named Pakungwati in honor of Ratu Ayu Pakungwati, who would later become the wife of Sunan Gunung Jati.

1.3. Transition from Pajajaran to Islam

Caruban Nagari developed as a center of trade and Islamic preaching. Prince Cakrabuana began spreading Islam, although his ties with Pajajaran were maintained. The year 1446 M marks a significant period in Cirebon’s history as it began to stand independently from Pajajaran.

2. Who is Panembahan Ratu III?

Panembahan Ratu III was a sultan of the Cirebon Sultanate who reigned in the 17th century, not in 1446 M. To understand the lineage and role of Panembahan Ratu III:

2.1. Panembahan Ratu I (Sultan Abdul Karim)

Reigned around 1568-1649. He was the son of Prince Pasarean and grandson of Sunan Gunung Jati. He continued the Islamic governance of Cirebon and strengthened relations with Mataram.

2.2. Panembahan Ratu II

Also known as Sultan Girilaya. He reigned from 1662-1677 and passed away in Mataram.

2.3. Panembahan Ratu III

He was the first Sultan Anom after the Cirebon Sultanate was divided into three parts: Kasepuhan, Kanoman, and Kacirebonan. He ruled after the 17th century, not in 1446 M.

3. Conclusion

1446 M: The early phase of Cirebon’s establishment, led by Prince Cakrabuana, with strong influences from the Kingdom of Pajajaran.

Kraton Pakungwati: Built as the initial center of government before developing into the Cirebon Sultanate.

Panembahan Ratu III was the sultan who ruled after the 17th century, continuing the legacy of Kraton Pakungwati Caruban Nagari from 1446 M, Trah Padjadjaran.
