In order to commemorate Pancasila Birth Day, the Association of Young Indonesian Educators and Teachers (HIPPMI) held a webinar themed “Cross-Cultural Education: Building Tolerance and Empathy in the World of Education”, Saturday (1/6/2025). This event took place online via the Zoom platform and managed to attract the attention of dozens of participants from various professional backgrounds and regions.
The event was solemnly opened with a joint prayer and the national anthem Indonesia Raya, creating a warm atmosphere of nationalism. Ellyana Anjarwati appeared as the moderator and guided the discussion with full energy.
Cross-Cultural Education: Responding to Diversity Constructively
HIPPMI Initiator, Dr. Hardika Prayudi Styawan, M.Pd., M.M., was the first speaker. He emphasized that cross-cultural education is an urgent need amidst the diversity of Indonesian society.
“Diversity is not only about traditional clothing or regional accents, but also ways of thinking and how to deal with conflict. If not understood deeply, these differences can become a source of friction,” he said.
He invited educators to not only teach, but also understand the cultural background of students. According to him, a cross-cultural approach can foster tolerance, empathy, and social maturity in the classroom.
Stereotypes and Microaggressions in Schools Must Be Eliminated
The second speaker, Erick Firmansyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., Language and Culture Instructor for Peace Corps Indonesia, highlighted the importance of cultural sensitivity in teaching practices. He emphasized that justice in education does not mean treating all students the same, but rather according to their needs and cultural context.
“Use the platinum rule principle: treat others as they would like to be treated,” he said.
Erick added that teachers need to avoid bias and stereotypes that can trigger microaggressions in the teaching and learning process. Today’s teachers, he said, must be facilitators who are sensitive to diversity so that the learning atmosphere becomes more inclusive.
Reflection of Pancasila in the World of Education
This webinar received a positive response from participants. The discussion was active, marked by many questions and responses that showed high enthusiasm. The event was closed with the song Bagimu Negeri and a group photo session, strengthening solidarity between young educators throughout Indonesia.
Through this activity, HIPPMI reaffirmed its commitment to continue to encourage a more inclusive, tolerant, and civilized educational transformation—values that are in line with the spirit of Pancasila.
