It all began in the South China Sea at the end of April 2010 — the exact date I can’t quite recall.
For 12 years after graduating from university, I worked in the oil and gas contracting industry, spending most of my time at drilling sites — both onshore and offshore, within and outside Indonesia.
At that time, I was assigned to an offshore platform in the South China Sea, near the Natuna area. Around 5:30 p.m., while enjoying a cigarette and a cup of coffee, I turned on the television to watch the news. Normally, I wasn’t interested in current affairs; my focus was always on work and providing for my family.
But somehow, that day was different. I was captivated by a news report about a man who had just been elected Mayor of Solo with 92% of the votes, according to early results.
As a former student activist during the 1998 Reform Movement in my hometown, I felt disturbed. That 92% figure reminded me of the New Order era, when President Soeharto was re-elected with similar overwhelming numbers. I thought to myself, “Has history repeated itself? Have the people been bought once again?” — frustration and disappointment welled up inside me, as if the ideals of reform we once fought for had been betrayed.
Yet, curiosity soon overtook my anger. I needed to know who this person was. The next morning, I even ordered a newspaper from the mainland to be sent by helicopter to our offshore platform. As I read through every article and report, I was astonished.
Every media outlet described this man as humble, honest, hardworking, dedicated, and deeply loved by the people.
In that instant, my perception changed completely. My resentment transformed into admiration. I made a promise to myself: I will support a leader like him to one day guide this nation.
From that moment on, I joined various social media groups that supported him. When news emerged that he would run for Governor of Jakarta, I actively helped share his achievements and track record.
Thanks be to God — he won the election honorably and democratically.
Soon after, the public began urging him to run for president. One of our friends living in Europe created a Facebook group named “JPK – JOKOWI, MY PRESIDENT.” In less than four hours, the group had already gained more than 2,000 members — and I was one of them, eventually becoming an admin.
From this online community, the seed of JPKP (Jaringan Pendamping Kebijakan Pembangunan) — or Network of Development Policy Companions — was born.
It was a movement of volunteers built upon the spirit of service and dedication — not driven by politics, but by genuine admiration for a people’s leader and the values he represented.
Later, I formally established JPKP as an organization that welcomes volunteers from all walks of life. We are not affiliated with any political party, but we also do not reject those with differing colors or backgrounds.
The soul of JPKP lies in grassroots engagement, simplicity, honesty, service, dedication, and hard work.
We believe that great change always begins with small actions — in our closest surroundings.
