CIMAHI — The traditional archery community Walet Basura Nusantara (WBN) successfully hosted the Cimahi Traditional Archery Tournament 2025 at Sangkuriang Field, Cimahi City, on Sunday (October 12, 2025).
The event served as both a gathering of traditional archers and an effort to preserve Indonesia’s ancestral heritage through a sport deeply rooted in local wisdom, amid declining youth interest in traditional culture.
Chairperson of WBN Cimahi Chapter, Siti Nur Syamsiah, explained that the tournament fully embraced traditional archery, where bows and arrows are crafted from wood and bamboo. She emphasized that bamboo carries a philosophical message symbolizing flexibility, endurance, and adaptability in life’s challenges.
“This tournament brought together 20 traditional archery clubs from across West Java, with a total of 210 participants,” said Siti Nur Syamsiah.
The Cimahi Cup 2025 featured seven competition categories, including KaSumedangan (for senior archers aged 50 and above), FFA men’s and women’s divisions, and youth-to-adult classes. Winners received trophies, certificates, and coaching rewards.
Siti highlighted the KaSumedangan category as a unique feature of the event, designed to celebrate elder participants who continue to keep the tradition alive.
“KaSumedangan is a special class, but most participants are seniors. We rarely see young people joining. We hope the younger generation will take part and help preserve this tradition,” she said.
Siti also expressed hopes for greater support from the local government to ensure the sustainability of traditional archery tournaments.
“We are a community movement without government funding. Hopefully, this event will raise awareness among stakeholders about the importance of supporting the preservation of traditional archery,” she added.
The tournament drew enthusiasm from younger archers as well.
Konita (12) from 26 Archery Bandung expressed excitement about joining the event.
“It’s so much fun to be here! I’ve been training four times a week—this tournament is something I really looked forward to,” she said.
Another participant, Sabia from TRJ Bandung, shared her joy in gaining valuable experience.
“I’ve been training for three years now, and joining this tournament is a great experience,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, Erika, a beginner who has only been practicing archery for three months, said the sport provides spiritual benefits as well.
“It’s only been three months since I started, but this tournament is really exciting. Archery isn’t just a sport—it also brings spiritual rewards,” she said enthusiastically.
