Every time the school year ends, thousands of students look forward to the moment called “school farewell”. For many, this is the culmination of a long journey in education. However, many also question: is the farewell still meaningful, or has it shifted to being an event to show off and waste?

On the one hand, the farewell event is considered an important moment to let go of memories, appreciate the struggle, and strengthen the emotional bond between students, teachers, and schools. Many see it as a form of appreciation for the educational process that has been undertaken. Through this activity, students can learn to manage emotions, express gratitude, and celebrate achievements together.

However, on the other hand, negative voices have emerged by criticizing and highlighting the dark side of student farewells. Not infrequently, farewells are colored by luxurious parties, expensive building rentals, glamorous clothing, and contribution costs that strangle parents. Sadly, not all students are able to participate in this activity. Some were forced to be absent due to financial problems, or attended with discomfort due to striking economic differences.

This polemic raises an important question: does the student farewell still reflect the true values of education?

Education should instill the values of simplicity, togetherness, and social sensitivity. Unfortunately, in some cases, farewells actually perpetuate inequality and obscure these values. So, it is time for schools, parents, and students to re-evaluate the concept of farewell.

Farewells do not have to be expensive to be memorable. Simply with a simple but meaningful package, for example, sufficient activities at school, art creation performances from students themselves, joint reflections, or planting trees of memory, etc. can leave a deep impression. The most important thing is the essence, namely ending the journey with gratitude, solidarity, and positive and optimistic hopes.

Farewells are not just ceremonial events. They are part of character education. And like education itself, they should shape the soul, not just satisfy the eyes.
