Amran Sulaiman’s resistance as Minister of Agriculture against the Vice President for beating up the rice mafia should be appreciated as a form of learning from the awareness to uphold the truth for the welfare of the people. The Vice President’s reprimand should also be questioned, what is behind his reprimand, what is the connection between the Vice President and the rice mafia in Indonesia?

This Bugis aristocrat and successful businessman born on April 27, 1968 has served as Minister of Agriculture since October 25, 2023, after holding the same position from October 27, 2014 to October 20, 2019, leading the Tiran Group, a large company headquartered in Makassar that predominantly operates in Eastern Indonesia, thus positioning himself as a relatively wealthy Minister in President Prabowo Subianto’s Red and White Cabinet.

His consistency in occupying the Ministry of Agriculture for the third time is also not half-hearted, at least not just wanting to be an official, but always in accordance with his expertise and interest in agricultural land.

Andi Amran Sulaiman is not only a graduate of the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, with a genuine bachelor’s degree in 1993 to a master’s and postgraduate degree from Hasanuddin University, Makassar in 2003 and 2012 with the same subject, namely agriculture, also with a maximum GPA and resulting in the discovery of pest control methods, so that he has 5 patents as a fairly popular lecturer at his alma mater.

One of Amran Sulaiman’s patents is rat poison, branded “Tiran” an acronym for the term “Rats Poisoned by Amran” which has grown very rapidly to involve 10 companies with a spectacular revenue value of almost US$ 1 billion in 2014. And received the Satyalencana Pembangunan award from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2007.

Since the beginning of his tenure as Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman has a target of self-sufficiency in 4 main food commodities for the Indonesian nation and state, namely rice, corn, soybeans and sugar by improving the irrigation system in 11 provinces in Indonesia.

This descendant of the King of Bone is also entitled to hold the title of nobility – Andi – from his ancestors, such as his younger brother Andi Sudirman Sulaiman, Deputy Governor of South Sulawesi with Governor Nurdin Abdullah.

Dr. Ir. H. Andi Amran Sulaiman, who has served as Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia for the third time, has proven his dedication to not only being an official — perhaps no longer dazzled by wealth and riches — because the many companies he owns have made him quite rich. The report from the LHKPN as of March 31, 2024 alone is already Rp. 1,196,888,974,072 which includes land and buildings, machine tools, movable assets, securities, cash and cash equivalents and others up to a total of Rp. 1,434,135,679,459, with a debt value of Rp. 237,246,705,388.

So it is clear, the position for Amran Sulaiman is selfless, except for wanting to improve the welfare of the Indonesian people through farmers. Therefore, the reprimand from the Vice President which he considered incorrect, was still heard even though the policies he had set continued to run. This means that the risk of being fired did not make Amran Sulaiman afraid. Because the truth must be upheld. The donation for the people is not only free from mafia and middlemen and loan sharks, but also provides lessons in ethics, morals and noble morals that must also be carried out by the people to be free and sovereign, especially in order to realize food self-sufficiency.
