Riau Police Chief Inspector General of Police Dr. Herry Heryawan Affirms Commitment to Preventing Forest and Land Fires Through the 2025 Karhutla Fun Run
PEKANBARU –ASWINNEWS.COM – Riau Police Chief Inspector General of Police Dr. Herry Heryawan, SIK, MH, M.Hum became a central figure in the 2025 Karhutla Fun Run activity which was held simultaneously in 12 regencies/cities throughout Riau Province on Sunday (13/4). In Pekanbaru City, thousands of participants filled Jalan Gajah Mada to take part in the 5-kilometer running agenda combined with environmental campaigns and disaster education.
In his remarks, the Police Chief emphasized the importance of building collective public awareness of the dangers of forest and land fires. “We must start from prevention. With this activity, we invite the public to love their own environment. This is not just about the forest, this is about our self-respect as Riau people,” said Inspector General Herry Heryawan.
Carrying the tagline “Protecting Tuah, Maintaining Dignity”, according to the Chief of Police, this activity reflects a deep philosophy about maintaining natural blessings (tuah) and regional honor (marwah). “We must protect this Tuah with dignity, which is our identity. If we ignore the environment, we ourselves will lose our honor in the eyes of the nation and the world,” he said.
Inspector General Herry also revealed that the Karhutla Fun Run 5K is an official agenda and has been patented as a copyright owned by the Riau Provincial Government and Polda. “This is a Riau product. We have coordinated with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and in the near future the copyright certificate will be issued. This shows our seriousness,” he explained.
With more than 20,000 participants involved, this activity is one real form of a humanist approach in preventing Karhutla. The Chief of Police emphasized that changing Riau’s image from a fire-prone area to a pioneer in environmental preservation is a big job that requires collaboration from all parties.
“The negative stigma against Riau must be changed. We do not want to continue to be known as a region that is always on fire. We can prove that Riau is able to be an example in handling and preventing forest and land fires sustainably,” he said.
The Chief of Police also encouraged the involvement of the younger generation in this campaign. Through creative media such as themed t-shirts, banners, information booths, and the dissemination of environmental messages through Polri social media, this activity targets a wider reach, especially among school and university students.
At the end of his statement, Inspector General Herry emphasized that the Karhutla Fun Run is not just a sport, but a cultural movement to build a culture of caring for the environment. “We want the community to be part of the solution, not just an object of handling. Every individual has an important role in keeping Riau green and dignified,” he concluded.
