Background

Kartini was born on April 21, 1879 in Jepara, Central Java, and was known as a critic of patriarchal society that limited women’s rights.

RA Kartini fought to raise awareness of the importance of education and gender equality, through the letters she wrote, which were later published in a book entitled “After Darkness Comes Light”.

As a form of recognition from the Government, RA.Kartini was designated a National Independence Hero in 1964 by President Sukarno.

The commemoration of Kartini Day on April 21 every year is usually celebrated with various activities. Such as parades, cultural performances, and discussions on gender equality and education, and many more.

On April 21, 2025, Indonesia will commemorate Kartini Day, with various events and activities to commemorate her services in fighting for women’s rights.
