Ketupat and Green Sabrang Between Tradition and the Meaning of Eid al-Fitr

Ketupat and Green Sabrang Between Tradition and the Meaning of Eid al-Fitr

Author, Abah Roy

Every Eid al-Fitr, Indonesian people have a tradition of serving ketupat and various other typical dishes, including green vegetables or what are often called green sabrang.

For some people, this dish is considered part of a religious ritual, while others see it as just a culinary tradition.

However, is it true that this dish has a religious meaning, or is it just a culture that has been passed down from generation to generation?

From a historical perspective, ketupat is believed to have been introduced by the Wali Songo as a symbol of the philosophy of life.

The woven coconut leaves that wrap the rice symbolize the complexity of human life, while the cooked rice inside reflects the cleanliness of the heart after undergoing the holy month of Ramadan.

This philosophy does contain deep moral values, but has no basis in Islamic teachings directly.

Meanwhile, green sabrang or green vegetables that are often served in Eid al-Fitr celebrations reflect more on the balance of nutrition and sustainability of life.

The color green itself in Islam is often associated with prosperity and blessings.

However, associating this dish with religious teachings absolutely is certainly not right, because Islam does not have specific rules regarding certain foods during Eid.

Therefore, ketupat and sabrang hijau are more appropriately called cultural heritage that is integrated with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, not as part of a religious ritual.

This tradition enriches the Eid experience, teaches social philosophy, and is a symbol of togetherness in the family.

However, it is important to understand that the essence of Eid al-Fitr does not lie in the type of food served, but in its spiritual value—returning to nature, strengthening ties, and asking for forgiveness from others.

In the end, it does not matter if people continue to maintain the presentation of ketupat and sabrang hijau as part of the Eid al-Fitr celebration, as long as it does not make it a religious requirement.

Tradition must still be understood in its context, so as not to get caught up in the wrong myth.

Because, more than just a dish, Eid al-Fitr is about returning to the purity of the soul and improving relationships with fellow human beings.
