Ramadan Traditions at Keraton Kanoman Cultural Heritage That Must Be Preserved
Author,abahroy
Ramadan is not only about personal worship, but also a moment of togetherness that enriches cultural and spiritual values.
At Keraton Kanoman Cirebon, the tradition of fasting during Ramadan has been passed down from generation to generation, reflecting the harmony between Islam and local wisdom.
One of the interesting things is Tarawih Tawurji at the Great Mosque of Sang Cipta Rasa.
This ritual is not just a prayer, but also a symbol of the continuation of the teachings of Wali Songo.
If you look deeper, this tradition is not only about worship, but also a way to teach the values of patience, togetherness, and discipline to the younger generation.
Then, there is Malam Selikuran, the night of 21 Ramadhan which is filled with prayers and tahlilan at the palace. Unfortunately, in this modern era, traditions like this are starting to fade among the younger generation.
The busyness of the digital world and a fast-paced lifestyle have made religious and cultural traditions increasingly marginalized.
Pilgrimage to ancestral graves before Eid al-Fitr is also a deep reflection.
Respecting ancestors is not just about visiting graves, but also understanding the values of their struggle. However, there are concerns that the meaning of this pilgrimage is increasingly shifting to just an annual ritual without deep appreciation.
When viewed from a broader perspective, the Ramadan tradition at the Kanoman Palace is not only a legacy of the palace family, but also a cultural asset that enriches the identity of the Cirebon community.
Therefore, there needs to be more serious efforts from various parties—both the government, society, and the younger generation—to maintain, care for, and re-interpret this tradition.
Don’t let it be that in the future, this tradition will only be a story in history books without anyone actually carrying it out.
