Cuing Drink: A Traditional Fresh Heritage That Is Still Popular

CIREBON-ASWINNEWS.COM- In the midst of the growing trend of modern drinks, cuing or green cincau drinks remain as one of the typical Sundanese dishes that are popular with various groups. Made from natural ingredients and served simply, this drink is not only refreshing but also has high health value.

Cuing, which in Sundanese means green cincau, comes from the leaves of the cincau plant (Tiliacora triandra). The manufacturing process is quite simple: green cincau leaves are squeezed with water to produce a thick liquid which is then left to harden like natural jelly. The result is a chewy texture that is ready to be served with coconut milk, liquid brown sugar, and ice cubes, creating a savory and sweet taste.

Although now many drinks with various innovations have emerged, cuing still has a special place in the hearts of the people. Many traditional traders still sell it in markets and small shops, especially in West Java. Not only that, several culinary entrepreneurs have started to develop this cuing drink with the addition of milk, brown sugar liquid, coconut, cendol and lemu porridge to make it more attractive to the younger generation.

A cuing seller, Udin (35), from Plered, Cirebon Regency, who sells his wares on Jalan Drajat Kel. Drajat Kec Kesambi, Cirebon City, when met by Journalist aswinnews.com, Friday, March 7, 2025, said that the demand for this cuing drink remains stable, especially during the summer and the current month of Ramadan.

“Many people are still looking for cuing because it tastes fresh and healthy. Now young people are also starting to like it, especially if it is made more contemporary,” he said.

According to nutrition experts, green cincau contains antioxidant compounds that are good for the body, help smooth digestion, and can relieve internal heat.

Its high fiber content also makes it a choice of healthy drink that is natural and safe for consumption by all groups.

Cuing drinks are not just traditional drinks, but also part of the Sundanese cultural identity that continues to be preserved. With its unique taste, health benefits, and flexibility in adapting to current trends, cuing remains one of the favorite drinks that survives the changing times.

In this modern era, maintaining traditional culinary like cuing is part of preserving cultural heritage. With innovations that still respect the original recipe, this drink has the potential to continue to grow and be known more widely, both domestically and internationally.
