In Indramayu, during the month of Ramadan, there are several special foods that are often sought after to break the fast. One of them is ragit, a special dish similar to roti canai or wide martabak but cut into small long pieces with a distinctive and savory curry sauce with a shrimp sauce flavor.

The Characteristic of Ragit is made from a mixture of wheat flour, eggs, and coconut milk which is made like a thin omelette and cut into small pieces. Then served with gulai or curry sauce rich in spices with a shrimp flavor.

It tastes savory and is suitable for breaking the fast because it is light but filling.

The History of Ragit, Indramayu’s Special Food During the Month of Ramadan

Ragit is one of Indramayu’s special foods that is popular during the month of Ramadan. This dish has a long history as part of the culinary tradition of the coastal communities of Indramayu and its surroundings.

The Origin and History of ragit are influenced by Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine.

Ragit is thought to have roots in Middle Eastern and Indian foods, such as roti canai or martabak. This was influenced by trade and the spread of Islam on the north coast of Java, including Indramayu.

The name “ragit” itself is similar to “roti ragit” which is known in several areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Ragit has long been known as a typical food for breaking the fast. The people of Indramayu often make it a special dish because of its savory taste and rich spice sauce.

Usually served at home or sold at takjil markets during the month of Ramadan.

Balance of taste: The combination of thin, soft omelettes with curry sauce symbolizes balance in life, especially in holding back lust during fasting.

Until now, ragit remains part of the Ramadan tradition in Indramayu and is increasingly popular in various regions.
