Wedang Ronde comes from the influence of Chinese cuisine, similar to Tangyuan in China. However, in Indonesia, wedang ronde has been modified with the addition of typical Nusantara ingredients. Yogyakarta is one of the cities famous for wedang ronde, often sold at angkringan or street vendors.
The ingredients of Wedang Ronde consist of ginger, brown sugar or rock sugar, sticky rice balls filled with crushed peanuts and sugar, Kolang-kaling, sometimes added with pieces of white bread and roasted or fried peanuts without oil.
My favorite popular place to enjoy Wedang Ronde in Yogyakarta is at Warung Angkringan Wedang Ronde Pak Waluyo, which is located in the parking lot of Ruksobayan Malioboro Yogyakarta.
When this media hung out at his stall again this year, while enjoying wedang ronde accompanied by drizzle, it made the legendary atmosphere even more fitting for me. “I open a wedang ronde stall from 15.30-23.00 at night. On average, I can finish 50 portions which are sold for Rp10,000 per portion,” said Waluyo who is now 52 years old.
“I often like to be involved in banquet events at the Yogyakarta Palace during the era of President Jokowi. The sad thing about selling here is that it is quite popular and well-known, but sometimes we are subject to discipline by officers. Our hope, in my opinion, is to obey and be orderly to the officers as long as we can trade,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, H. Juanda from the Atthaya Indramayu Crew when interviewed said that his team usually subscribes to enjoying Pak Waluyo’s wedang ronde while waiting for the students he brings.
“Enjoying wedang ronde here is very exciting, especially like now accompanied by dim lights and. The blue sky accompanied by light rain makes it even more fun and romantic. For us, this is the atmosphere and taste of wedang ronde that makes us addicted,” said H. Juanda closing the conversation.
