A. The Phenomenon of Social Nolep in Generation Z

The term “No life/nolep” has become increasingly popular among young Indonesians. However, what is the real meaning behind this word and why is this phenomenon a concern for many people today.

Although this term may initially sound negative, it is important to understand that “nolep” does not always have a bad connotation. Some people may choose this lifestyle for various reasons, ranging from personal preferences to certain mental or physical health conditions.

In the modern context, a nolep is often associated with individuals who spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen or other electronic devices, whether for work, study, gaming, or simply surfing the internet. They may feel more comfortable interacting through social media or online platforms than face-to-face meetings.

The term “nolep” has interesting roots in the development of slang in Indonesia. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when and where the term first emerged, we can trace its evolution through social and technological contexts.

Initially, the term “no life / nolep” was used in English to describe someone who did not have an active social life or hobbies outside of their daily routine.

As the use of the internet and social media increased in Indonesia, the term began to be adopted and modified into “nolep”.

The popularity of the term increased rapidly along with the growth of online communities, especially among gamers and social media users. Internet forums, chat rooms, and social media platforms became places where the term was often used, both as a lighthearted joke and as a self-description.

Interestingly, although “nolep” originated from an English phrase, its use in Indonesia has shifted in meaning and nuance. In Indonesia, “nolep” not only refers to a lack of social life, but is also often associated with a lifestyle that is more focused on indoor activities, especially those involving technology. These things or characteristics are identical to many Gen Z generations.

The “No Life / nolep” phenomenon in the Gen Z generation is a condition in which someone is too focused on certain activities—such as playing games, socializing in cyberspace, or working excessively—to the point of ignoring social life in the real world. This phenomenon is often associated with a lack of direct social interaction, self-isolation, and an unbalanced lifestyle.

B. Causes of the “No Life / nolep” Phenomenon in Gen Z

This social phenomenon occurs due to the following influences:
1. Technology Addiction.
Many Gen Z are more comfortable interacting digitally than in person.

2. Hustle Culture (Excessive Hard Work). The pressure to succeed makes them focus on work or academics to the point of ignoring social life.

3. Gaming & Digital Entertainment.
Many spend hours playing online games or watching digital content.

4. Social Media & FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
Too focused on cyberspace and afraid of missing out on information from the internet.

5. Lack of Social Opportunities, The pandemic and the trend of remote work reduce direct social interactions.

C. Impact of the “No Life/nolep” Phenomenon

1. Mental Health. Feelings of loneliness, stress, and anxiety increase.

2. Physical Health Lack of exercise, irregular eating patterns, and sleep disorders.

3. Social Relationships. Difficulty in building healthy relationships in the real world.

4. Productivity.
Decreased motivation in work or education due to excessive focus on one aspect of life.
