Kerupuk melarat, a special snack from Cirebon that is fried using hot sand, is now being hunted by tourists. In the last few days, Pasar Plered, the center of trading in special souvenirs in Cirebon Regency, has experienced a significant spike in demand. Tourists from various regions flock to buy kerupuk melarat in large quantities, either to enjoy themselves or as souvenirs.

However, behind the deliciousness and unique way of making it, kerupuk melarat is also associated with mystical elements in local culture. Some people believe that the bright colors of these crackers—red, yellow, and green—have certain spiritual meanings, such as protection, balance, and luck. Not infrequently, kerupuk melarat is used in traditional rituals or as offerings in the Javanese tradition.

In addition, the philosophy behind the name “melarat” which means poor is also believed to contain a message of life. Javanese people see it as a reminder of the importance of living simply and being grateful. Some psychics even say that poor people’s crackers can be used in certain rituals to ward off bad luck or bring good fortune.

Regardless of these beliefs, one thing is for sure, the high demand for poor people’s crackers has had a positive impact on traders at Plered Market.

With the increasing interest of tourists, Plered Market is increasingly asserting itself as a center for trading in Cirebon’s culinary specialties. Is its appeal limited to taste or are there supernatural elements that accompany it? It all depends on each person’s beliefs.
